I-DEA Senior, Eli Glascock was the recipient of one of the top academic scholarships offered by Gonzaga University and will use the $50,000 scholarship to begin at Gonzaga in the fall. Eli is the son of Julie and Patrick Glascock of Coeur dÕAlene. Congratulations to Eli and his parents!
Hannah Johnson won the 2010 Boise Junior High Tennis Championship tournament. She has been playing tennis for two years and plans to continue playing in high school. In addition to tennis, Hannah also enjoys basketball, piano, reading, and writing. Hannah is the daughter of Arlene and Eric Johnson Boise. Congratulations!
Tenth grade student, Harrison Goecke, is the 2011 Idaho winner of the Junior Duck Stamp Competition, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Students in grades K-12 are eligible to participate in the national competition by studying waterfowl anatomy and habitat, then submitting a drawing, painting, or sketch of a North American waterfowl. This was HarrisonÕs fifth year of participating in the competition; he has won his age level division two previous years. Art is HarrisonÕs favorite subject and he plans to pursue it in his career plans for the future. Harrison is from Post Falls and is the son of Lauri and Donnie Goecke.
I-DEAÕs North Idaho Chapter of Idaho Drug Free Youth (IDFY) hosted a ÒHealth FairÓ at Skate Plaza in Coeur dÕAlene. Working from a grant awarded by the American Lung Association, IDFY students shared facts on the hazards of tobacco and second hand smoke to I-DEA students of all ages. Students were also treated to a free skate as part of the event!
Madison Moody, daughter of Melanie and Steve Moody, was the 1st place Eastern Idaho winner for the second grade in the PBS ÒKids Go WriterÕs ContestÓ. MaddieÕs story, ÒLadybug HollowÓ, was about a ladybug helping other ladybugs solve their aphid problem. She says her story was inspired by watching the ladybugs on a tree in her backyard. Congratulations Madison!
Melanie Strong-Duncan received 2nd prize (in grades 6-8) and $25 for artwork she submitted for the Snake River Birds of Prey Festival 2011 Youth Art Contest. The subject is a Northern Sawhet owl. Nice work Melanie!
I-DEA's TATU (teens against tobacco use) club has been busy this semester! They received a grant from the American Lung Association for presentation materials that included the pig lungs shown in the photo. The group has presented to over 900 people, both adults and students, on the harmful effects of tobacco. Group members are: Hannah Logue, Gabrielle Boliou, Spencer Boliou, and Andre' Boliou.
Kaylee Owsley, daughter of Jim and Holly Owsley, was recently selected as the swimmer of the month for the Boise YMCA Swim Team. Kaylee has worked hard this year to consistently beat her own best times, qualifying her to compete in the Winter Champs meet. Her coach said of Kaylee, Òher work ethic during practice is great, sheÕs one of the few who never complains and gives it her all 100% of the time.Ó
Second grader, Grace Partridge, of Rigby Idaho, loves playing the fiddle and took 2nd place in the small fry division at the Dillon Montana fiddle contest in January 2011. She also played at the national Oldtime FiddlerÕs Contest in Weiser Idaho last year. Grace has been playing fiddle since she was four years old and is the daughter of Jennifer and Ryan Partridge.
I-DEAÕs North Chapter of Idaho Drug Free Youth students recently hosted a terrific ÒKick Butts DayÓ as part of the national Campaign for Tobacco ÐFree Kids. Kick Butts Day is an annual celebration of youth leadership and activism in the fight against tobacco use. Over 100 people attended this community event. The IDFY group is led by I-DEA community coordinator, Karen Ashenbrenner.
Melanie Strong-Duncan, just celebrated her first year as a volunteer at Simply Cats Adoption. MelanieÕs responsibilities include cleaning rooms (sweep, mop, litter boxes, etc.), feeding, and dispensing plenty of kitty love. She has also fostered a litter of kittens in preparation for adoption, and she has plans to foster another litter next month. Melanie is the 6th grade daughter of Michele Strong-Duncan and Douglas Duncan.
Reylene Abbott, a 10th grade student from Kimberly, Idaho, has been selected for the Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars Program (ISAS). This is a competitive program that allows high school juniors to take a NASA-developed course on Space Exploration and work with master teachers. It includes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and at the completion of the course students participate in a Capstone Celebration with other scholars from around the state. Selected students then have the opportunity to attend an expense-paid, resident academy at NASA Ames Research Center in California. Reylene is the daughter of Craig and Sharon Abbott. Congratulations Reylene!
I-DEAÕs Future City team took 2nd place in the state competition held January 22, 2011 at Boise State. They also won three special awards: 1) Best Futuristic City, 2) Best Sim City design, and 3) Best Medical System. In addition, each of the three presenters received a $100 scholarship to attend e-Camp hosted by the BSU College of Engineering this summer.

Joshua Partridge is a Òcertified old-time fiddlerÓ and has earned a place in the National Old-time FiddlersÕ Hall of Fame in Weiser Idaho! He won his division at the Idaho Open Fiddle Contest last year and then placed 5th in the 2010 National Oldtime Fiddlers Contest. Congratulations!
Amanda Partridge of Rigby, Idaho, has been selected for the Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars Program (ISAS), a competitive program that allows high school juniors to take an engaging online NASA-developed course on Space Exploration. Students work with master educators and the course includes a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills. At the completion of the course, students participate in an ISAS Capstone Celebration, a regional gathering with other scholars from around the state, and may have the opportunity to attend an expense-paid, resident academy at NASA Ames Research Center in California. Amanda is the 11th grade daughter of Jennifer and Ryan Partridge. Nice work Amanda!

Amanda Partridge was one of the highest performing students in the Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars program to participate in an expense-paid, week-long resident academy at Boise State University and NASA Ames Research Center in California. This is an extremely competitive award and we are proud of her stretching her Òmental musclesÓ outside of her chosen area of economics and political science.

Congratulations to Elizabeth and Aaron Delie, children of Kimberly and Andrew Delie, who were recently announced as winners in the 2010 Forest Products Week Essay Contest. Elizabeth was the first place winner in the K-2nd grade division, and Aaron received honorable mention in the 3-5th grade division. The contest was open to students throughout the state of Idaho and elementary students were asked to write how forest products touch their lives. Their winning essays can be read on the Idaho Forest Products Commission website.
Grace Reeder, first grade daughter of Randy and Kimberly Reeder, was recently announced as the honorable mention winner for the K-2nd grade division in the 2010 Forest Products Week Essay Contest. The Contest is open to students statewide and elementary students were asked to respond to the prompt of how forest products touch their lives. GraceÕs essay included a picture showing how trees take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. Congratulations Grace!
Sock drive in North Idaho a big success! Members of I-DEAÕs Idaho Drug Free Youth (IDFY) North Idaho chapter donated 140 pair of socks to local homeless people in their community. What a great idea!
Rebecca Meredith of Post Falls was recently awarded the prestigious Toni M. Robideaux Graphic Design Scholarship and recognized by North Idaho College as an outstanding student in the field of graphic design. Rebecca is a 2008 graduate of I-DEA, has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, and is in her junior year working toward a degree in Applied Science in Graphic Design.
